Also known as pesis, pesapallo is basically the Finnish version of baseball. Originating in 1920, it’s the national sport in Finland and a huge deal in the small Scandinavian country.
Think of it a little like rounders and you’re not far off. A regular game is played in two periods of four innings and follows the rules of baseball in the main. There are nine defenders that aim to stop 12 attackers scoring runs. A run is scored when one player gets all the way around the bases, and the team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. Players can hit home runs just like in baseball too.
Whilst pesapallo is similar to baseball, there are some key differences. The first is the way the field is set up. In pesapallo there is a zig-zag base path, with a rectangular outfield and three bases for players to run between. The players that stand at each base and look to get the runners out are called “Jokers”.
Another key difference between this sport and baseball is the position of the pitcher. They stand next to the batter and throw the ball vertically – this makes it easier to hit the ball and control the direction and power. The ball has to reach at least one metre above the batter’s head to be deemed a fair ball.
